About the Symposium
Bridging the Spectrum: A Symposium on Scholarship and Practice in Library and Information Science offers a knowledge-sharing forum and meeting place for practitioners, students, and faculty in Library and Information Sciences and Services. Presentations are selected to showcase innovative practices, projects, and research activities in a variety of library, archives, or information services activities. Because students, faculty, and practitioners all share their work, the Symposium encompasses many different aspects and points of view on Library and Information Professional work. The program's goal is to foster unexpected connections across the spectrum of the information professions.
Keynote Address
This year's keynote address was delivered by Alan Inouye, Director of Public Policy for the American Library Association.
Dr. Alan Inouye leads ALA’s technology policy portfolio ranging from telecommunications to copyright and licensing, to advance the ability of libraries to contribute to the economic, educational, cultural, and social well-being of America’s communities. He is a recognized expert in national technology policy, serves on advisory boards for committees of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the U.S. State Department, Library For All, and the University of Maryland. Dr. Inouye began his career in the computer industry in Silicon Valley. He worked as a computer programmer for Atari, a statistician for Verbatim, and a manager of information systems for Amdahl (now Fujitsu). Dr. Inouye completed his Ph.D. at the University of California at Berkeley and earned three master’s degrees, in business administration (finance), systems engineering, and computer systems.
Abstract: "Making Sense of the Headlines: Advancing Public Policy for the LIS Community"
The public policy field has been tumultuous during the past year—to put it mildly. The national agenda includes net neutrality, federal funding for libraries, and education policy—not to mention the numerous above-the-fold stories and Presidential tweets. While we follow the news, we must not forget to ask: what is the more fundamental change taking place? The discrete activities need to be synthesized with the larger trends in government, technology, commerce, and society. What is really happening beneath the surface and over time—policy-wise? And how can the library and information science community best influence policy and move our interests higher on the political agenda—or at least defend ourselves as much as possible?

Parking
We encourage attendees to use Metro if possible. The Pryzbyla Center is a short walk from the Brookland Metro stop. If you are driving, you may park in the law school garage (see photo), located at 3600 John McCormack Dr., NE. In the garage you will see signs pointing you to the elevator which will take you to the walkway in front of the Pryzbyla Center.
