“Bridging the Spectrum: A Symposium on Scholarship and Practice in Library and Information Science,” offers a knowledge-sharing forum and meeting place for practitioners, students, and faculty in Library and Information Sciences and Services. Presentations are selected to showcase innovative practices, projects, and research activities in a variety of library, archives, or information services activities. Because students, faculty, and practitioners all share their work, the Symposium encompasses many different aspects and points of view on Library and Information Professional work. The program’s goal is to foster unexpected connections across the spectrum of the information professions.

Librarians Making a Difference: New Roles and Opportunities

Maureen Sullivan is President-Elect of the American Library Association. She is an organizational development consultant whose practice focuses on the delivery of consulting and education services to libraries and other information organizations. She designs and presents workshops and leadership institutes on topics of current relevance to librarians and library staff.  She also is a frequent speaker on a variety of topics that relate to the future of libraries and the changing nature of librarianship.

She is on the faculty of the annual Leadership Institute for Academic Librarians and is a professor of practice in the Ph.D./Managerial Leadership in the Information Professions program at the Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information Science. She is the 2010 recipient of the ACRL Research Librarian of the Year award.

She will offer her perspectives on how the work and roles of librarians are changing as content and our collections become more digital, as the larger information eco-system continues to grow in complexity, and as the people and communities we serve continue to need access to information and resources. She will stress the need for every librarian to embrace the new roles and to become effective leaders in their communities.
