The CUA LIS Alumni Association is excited to announce that Carrie Banks will be our speaker for the 35th annual Stone Lecture.
Traditionally, when library staff do outreach, we tell the community what services we offer. Then we wait for people to come. Providing library services for all means designing with everyone. Staff at Brooklyn Public Library’s Inclusive Services have built a model program for youth with disabilities and the adults in their lives by asking what they want and need. Partnerships are at the core of what we do. We work with the community, using Universal Design and Universal Design for Learning principles, to create a welcoming library environment that meets the needs of all of our users and potential users. Make “Nothing About Us Without Us” the touchstone of your library and ask what we should be doing.

About the Speaker
Carrie Banks, Supervising Librarian, Brooklyn Public Library
Carrie Banks is a distinguished leader in the field of inclusive librarianship and currently serves as the Supervising Librarian for the Brooklyn Public Library’s (BPL) "The Child’s Place," a nationally recognized program for children with and without disabilities. Throughout her career, she has been a tireless advocate for accessibility, developing innovative services that ensure the library remains a welcoming and equitable space for all patrons, regardless of physical or cognitive challenges. Her expertise in adaptive technologies and inclusive programming has made her a sought-after consultant and educator within the global library community.
Beyond her work at BPL, she has held influential leadership positions within the American Library Association (ALA) and the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), contributing to the development of national standards for accessible library services. She is a proud alumna of The Catholic University of America’s Department of Library and Information Science.
About the Stone Lecture Series
Established in 1990, the Elizabeth W. Stone Lecture Series honors Dr. Elizabeth W. Stone, Dean Emerita of the School of Library and Information Science (SLIS), for her service to the school and the library profession. Dr. Stone (M.S.L.S. '61) joined the LIS faculty in 1961 and was named chair of the Department of Library Science in 1972. Under her leadership, the department became the School of Library and Information Science in 1981 and she served as Dean until 1983.
The Elizabeth W. Stone Lecture series is held each spring. The speakers, who are invited by the Alumni Association, include esteemed librarians, university presidents, journalists, members of professional associations, and government representatives.
The 13th Annual Elizabeth W. Stone Lecture included a special remembrance of Dr. Stone, who passed away on March 6, 2002, at the age of 83. Her presence throughout the years has given the school a sense of continuity, connecting students with the larger Catholic University library and information science community of alumni. This lecture series strives to bring innovators in the library profession to Catholic University that demonstrate Dr. Stone's commitment to the life-long development of librarians.
